Enduring Spirit of the ANZAC March.

300km walked. A story now shared across the region.

Regional media coverage capturing the Enduring Spirit of the ANZAC March and the communities who showed up on the way.

This article, published in the Regional Independent, captures the journey of the Unknown Veteran who walked 300 kilometres from Holsworthy to Canberra in the lead up to Anzac Day.

It tells the story of the road, the communities, and the purpose behind the march.

But like all good stories, it only shows part of what really happened.

Because what mattered most often happened in between the steps.

A newspaper page featuring a story about a veteran completing a 300km walk supporting Red Shield Defence Services. The page includes a photo of veterans and community members marching, some in military uniforms, carrying flags, and walking through trees. Additional smaller photos show individuals and memorial sites, with an advertisement for Blind Creek Solar Farm at the bottom.

What This Made Possible

Together, this march helped raise $30,000 in support of the Sallyman and Red Shield Defence Services.

This is more than a figure.

It represents supports that shows up when it’s needed most - practical, consistent, and grounded in care.

Not later. Not eventually.

Now.

This is what 300km looked like.

A journey from Holsworthy to Canberra - carried by one, supported by many.

The early starts. The long stretches. The quiet conversations in between. But more than anything, it shows what happens when people choose to show up - for each other.

One purpose.

This wasn’t just a walk.

It was people showing up - for each other.

And together, raising $30,000 for the Sallyman.

The march was just the beginning.

The movement continues.

FAQs

Why is this march happening and how can I be involved?

1

This march is about raising awareness of the ongoing veterans and their families face - and the support systems that need to stay in place. At the centre of that is The Sallyman.

What is the Enduring Spirit of the Anzac March?

2

The Enduring Spirit of the ANZAC March is a 300km journey from Holsworthy to Canberra, taking place from April 15th -24th. An unknown veteran will walk the full distance in full WW1 kit and pack, representing every Veteran and what many carry long after service ends. Stay in touch with our socials to learn about the 2027 Veteran March.

What is the Sallyman?

3

The Sallyman is part of The Salvation Army and provides support to veterans and their families - often in difficult, behind the scenes moments. For many, it’s a steady presence when things get tough.

Why does the Sallyman matter?

4

It comes from The Salvation Army which was founded in 1865. Their support to military personnel goes back over a century and we are about to lose that tradition. They supported troops in World War 1 and continued to World War 11 and beyond. So when people talk about “the Sallyman” in a defence context they’re talking about a tradition of support that can’t be lost to lack of funding.
