Townsville — the heart of Australian Defence
Townsville is not just Australia's largest regional city — it is the nation's premier garrison city. With a vision to be the ADF's forward mounting base and Army home base of choice by 2030, Townsville's connection to Defence is woven into the fabric of the community. More ADF members serve here, more veterans live here, and more veteran families call this city home than anywhere else in Australia.
For Advocates Online, Townsville is not a market we service remotely — it is where we were born. We understand the transition experience of a 3rd Brigade infantryman, the specific conditions that come from tropical service, and the particular challenges facing veterans who have built their lives here after discharge.
Lavarack Barracks
Home to the 3rd Brigade and elements of the 1st Division, 11th Brigade and 17th Sustainment Brigade. One of Australia's major military establishments.
RAAF Base Townsville
Forward operating base for ADF operations into the South West Pacific. Home to No. 27 Squadron and No. 65 Air Base Recovery Squadron.
Wounded Heroes
Supporting wounded, ill and injured veterans and their families in North Queensland. A vital part of the Townsville veteran community and a valued Advocates Online partner.
RSL North Queensland
18 RSL Queensland Sub Branches serve the North Queensland district. The Townsville RSL Sub Branch has operated since 1919.
How we can help
DVA claims and veteran advocacy in Townsville
Advocates Online provides the full range of VAPSA-accredited veteran advocacy services from our Townsville headquarters. Whether you are still serving at Lavarack or RAAF Base Townsville, recently discharged, or a long-term veteran who has never engaged with DVA — we can help.
VAPSA-accredited — the professional standard
VAPSA accreditation is the independent professional standard for veteran advocacy in Australia. No other advocacy service in Townsville carries this accreditation. It means we operate under an externally enforced code of conduct — not a self-declared one.
Services we provide to Townsville veterans
- DVA claims — initial liability, new claims under MRCA, all conditions

DVA changes July 2026
What the DVA reform means for Townsville veterans
From 1 July 2026, all new DVA claims must be lodged under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act (MRCA). The VEA and DRCA are closed to new claims. This affects every Townsville veteran who has not yet lodged a claim — whether you served at Lavarack, at RAAF Base Townsville, or deployed from here on operations.
If you served at Lavarack or RAAF Base Townsville and never claimed
Your pathway is still open under MRCA. The window has changed but the door is not closed. Contact Advocates Online for a free assessment of your specific situation before July 1. The first consultation costs you nothing.
For currently serving members at Lavarack Barracks or RAAF Base Townsville — the most important thing you can do before your discharge date is document your conditions in your Defence medical records and gather your service history while you still have access. Book a pre-discharge consultation with Advocates Online at no cost.

Yes. Advocates Online is headquartered in Townsville — Australia's largest veteran community. Yes — and you should before you discharge. Pre-discharge advocacy is one of the most valuable services we offer. We can assess which conditions are claimable, advise on what to document while you still have access to your records, and lodge a DVA claim before your discharge date so the process is already underway when you leave service.
The first consultation is always free. Call 1300 559 421 or book online.
Townsville has 15,408 current and formerly serving ADF members according to ABS Census data — the highest concentration of any Australian city. The city is home to Lavarack Barracks (3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 11th Brigade, 17th Sustainment Brigade) and RAAF Base Townsville, making it Australia's premier garrison city.
Yes — we operate nationally. Veterans in Cairns, Mackay, Charters Towers, Mount Isa and across regional Queensland are welcome to contact us. We work by phone and video as well as in person. Veterans anywhere in Australia can access our services.
Advocates Online focuses specifically on DVA claims, legal entitlements and professional advocacy under the VAPSA professional standard. The RSL provides community connection, welfare support, and general assistance. Both serve important roles — they are complementary, not competing.
If your primary need is to navigate DVA, lodge a claim, appeal a rejection or secure a retrospective invalidity classification — that is what Advocates Online does. If you are looking for community, mateship and general veteran support — the RSL North Queensland network is excellent.
